Know
Your Style:
Below
are some of the styles that we have listed in Forsyth Woman
Magazine, and a few others that you can be watching
for!
French Country
Style: An early American look with French accents.
Furniture is usually walnut, or oak with simple lines and
less veneer and ornate carvings. Cotton fabrics may include
small repetitive prints or stripes, or lace curtains. Rugs
may be detailed with flower and vine patterns. It can also
include a French armoire with simple carvings, decorative
plates on walls framing a door or in a row. Small porcelain
figurines make interesting accent pieces. To add a Formal
French look and a special touch, it may utilize dressier
chairs, chests, and consoles from the Louis XIV, XV, XVI
period. Straight lines are replaced with Bombay chests and
fluted legs.
Contemporary:
Comprised of clean lines, upholstery colors, and simple
furniture. You have to mix exciting dramatic artwork &
accents that make “your” statement, all while handling it
with great care so that it does not become stark and cold.
Leather is used a lot in this style. Glass, chrome molded
accent pieces compliment this look as well as large sleek
wall units with glass for storage. Floor materials range
from wood to marble to ceramic tile. I like to use large
plants and very little pattern on the upholstered
furnishings.
Signs of
English Country Style: Wall brackets, mirrors, oil
paintings of still life or landscapes, books left open,
stacked on tables etc., fresh flowers or herbs in vases or
bowls, brass containers, cotton slipcovers, ottomans trimmed
with fringe, and even needlepoint accents to offer charm.
Signs of
Eclectic Style: A strong color scheme, many kinds of
artwork may be used and be similarly framed to give a sense
of unity. May also use simple design lamps and if furniture
pieces are ornate use solid color fabrics. The solids will
enhance the details on furniture. A touch of black can
actually help the room setting. Remember, certain periods
don’t mix well. Balance with one ornate piece and one of
simple clean lines.
Other upcoming
styles: Tuscany, Mediterranean, Victorian, & More!
